What is abortion with pills and how does it work?

  Share

Abortion with pills, also called medical abortion or medication abortion, means ending a pregnancy by taking pills. The pills cause an induced miscarriage (bleeding from the vagina) that is identical to a spontaneous miscarriage.

There are two common methods of abortion with pills:

1. using a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol or

2. using only misoprostol

The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is slightly more effective and may have less side effects, but both methods are widely used, effective and safe. If you use our service you will get both mifepristone and misoprostol. In some places, it might be easier and cheaper to get only misoprostol.

Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary to maintain a pregnancy. That weakens the pregnancy and prepares the womb for misoprostol. Misoprostol opens the cervix and causes cramping of the uterus, which pushes out the pregnancy tissue, clots and blood. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
