What kinds of pills can be used for abortion?

There are two recommended medications for abortion - mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone is always used in combination with misoprostol, but misoprostol can also be used on its own for abortion. These are the generic names of the drugs, meaning that they come in different forms, under different brand names, and with different packaging.

Misoprostol is sold under many different brand names, such as Cytotec, Citotec, Cyrux, Misotrol, as well as a generic medication. Pills usually contain 200 micrograms of misoprostol, though in rare cases it is possible to find pills of 100mcg misoprostol or 400 mcg misoprostol.

Sometimes misoprostol is sold in pills that contain 200 micrograms of misoprostol, plus 50-75 mg of diclofenac, under brand names such as Arthrotec, Rotec, Misofen, or Oxaprost. In this case, the misoprostol is usually in a thick outer coating of the tablet, and the diclofenac is a harder pill inside of the misoprostol outer layer. It is NOT recommended to swallow the inside of these pills, to avoid taking too high a dose of diclofenac. Because misoprostol is often used under the tongue or inside the cheeks, these pills can be spit out after 30 minutes have passed, rather than swallowed.
