How strong will the pain be? Can I use painkillers?

The pain and cramping that are part of the abortion process are very different in each experience. The pain can be similar to period, or it can be much stronger.

Painkillers can help make the process much more comfortable.

Ibuprofen has been clinically shown to be the most effective painkiller for cramps during an abortion. Some people might also want to take other painkillers like paracetamol/Tylenol or NSAIDs like naproxen for other symptoms, such as headaches. Painkillers can be taken before or when the pain appears. Relaxation, distraction with something to pass the time, having a supportive person with you, movement, warm compresses, hot showers and comfortable positions are all possible ways to diminish the pain.
