How do I recognize if have an infection?

  Share

The risk of infection after using abortion pills is very low (about 1%). Although infections are very uncommon, it is important to be alert for symptoms of infections, which can happen days or weeks following an abortion. Infections can be recognized by:

- a fever of 39 degrees at any time, or of 38 degrees that lasts for more than 24 hours

- an abnormal vaginal discharge with a strong, unpleasant odor and/or unusual (yellow-green) color

- pain, tenderness, or pressure in the abdomen

In case of any sign of infection, it is important to get treatment as soon as possible. Infections are easily treated, if caught early.

The chances and symptoms of infection after a spontaneous miscarriage are the same as those after using the pills.
