How can I prepare myself for the abortion?
It is helpful to make a plan for the abortion and to know what will be needed during the process.
If nausea from pregnancy is a problem, having ginger tea on hand, and planning on using the pills at a time of day that the nausea is less strong can help avoid vomiting the pills. This is especially important when using mifepristone.
On the day the misoprostol is taken, there is bleeding and cramping, so it is recommended to be in a comfortable place with access to a bathroom, and have a few hours to rest.
Having a friend for support can help in the unlikely scenario that something goes wrong, as well as help to pass the time – chat, watch a movie, prepare food. It is important to come up with an emergency plan together ahead of time. The instructions and information can be shared with the friend. Feeling relaxed and supported can actually make the abortion process less painful.
It is recommended to get sanitary (menstrual) pads for periods, painkillers and/or hot water bottle, anti-nausea medication (in case of suffering from severe nausea), food and drinks, and to have something to pass the time like books, games, series/movies. 4, 9, 13
