When can I start using contraceptives?
Hormonal or barrier methods of contraception can be started right away, on the day that either the mifepristone or misoprostol are taken. Starting hormonal contraceptive methods (contraceptive pills, injections, implants or patches) within 5 days of taking abortion pills gives full protection right away. If hormonal methods are started more than 5 days after taking the misoprostol, it is best to use an additional barrier method (condoms) for the first week or two in order to be protected. An IUD can be inserted immediately after the abortion, or later.
