Do I need an ultrasound or check-up after the abortion?

It is not necessary or recommended to have an ultrasound, if the process went well and there is no complication.

An ultrasound can be helpful if it is unclear whether or not the pregnancy is continuing.

If there are no signs of complications, it is up to each person to decide if and when they would like to go to the doctor for an ultrasound or a check-up after the abortion. There are different ways of confirming the success of the abortion that do not require seeing a doctor, but some people may find it useful or comforting to get an ultrasound or a check-up.

An ultrasound or check-up can be done anytime after an abortion, but if the ultrasound is taken before 7-10 days have passed, there is a higher chance that some tissues or remains from the pregnancy will be seen in the uterus, and some doctors might recommend a surgical procedure to empty the uterus. If there are no signs of complication, this is generally not necessary – the uterus will empty on its own with a bit more time, or more misoprostol can be used to help empty the uterus.
